New Dining at the Airport

I stopped into the new restaurant, Reflections at the Airport, yesterday and, after being startled by the over exuberant hostess who abruptly opened the door for me as I reached to open it, I was greeted by a very pleasant Jacques Henry, General Manager.  Mr. Henry invited me in to sit next to the lovely new fireplace where I had a nice view of the airport runway to my right and small bar to my left.  The bar tender, whose name I did not catch, was also very friendly and asked if I were sure that I would not like anything to drink as he went about sprucing up his area in preparations for the evening crowd.  I asked Mr. Henry about himself and his family, with whom he runs the restaurant, and it turns out Read the rest of this entry »

New Safeway Construction on Track

I had the privilege today of having an insider tour of the new Safeway store, still under construction.  Store Manager, Bob Silcott, 1st Assistant Manager, Nick Waldbillig and TiltonPacific Construction Senior Supervisor, John Yeoman, led me, and more importantly, eight department managers, on a hard hat tour of the new facility.  Be sure to watch the slide show at the end of the story!

I asked Mr. Yeoman how the progress of the new 64,000 square foot store was coming and with a pleasant grin he replied, Read the rest of this entry »

Winco in Gig Harbor?

Coming Soon?

For years, it seems that the rumors of Winco Foods coming to Gig Harbor have flown, but they have remained just that, rumors.  With Safeway building a beautiful new store and strip mall to include Kohl’s and several other retailers, the Winco rumors have come back to life with renewed vigor.

To verify the truth or untruth of this rumor, I contacted Winco’s PR department, Read the rest of this entry »

Race for a Soldier

Many Americans take the precious gift of freedom for granted as they go about their daily lives, but it is very important to remember that freedom is NOT free.  Admittedly, here in the Puget Sound where we are surrounded by military bases, it seems that most people understand the sacrifices that are being made every day by those brave men and women who don’t always come home the same person they were when they left.

Fortunately, the discussion surrounding post deployment disorders, such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, has become much more open since the days Read the rest of this entry »

For Thelma…

Our family ran out of milk today, as families often do, so off to the grocery store I went.  During my return trip, I came across a startling and somewhat sad sight.  As I exited the freeway at Purdy, I immediately noticed a blue Honda with its hazard lights flashing and a pleasant looking woman walking about 25 yards ahead of it.  I quickly (but safely) pulled to the shoulder, startling her, and asked if she needed help.  The nice woman replied, somewhat shakily, “I blew a tire and have been sitting there with my hazards on for quite some time, but no one stopped, so since I didn’t want to sit there all night, I decided to start walking.”  She asked to use my cell phone to call her daughter, who did not answer, and told me that her husband was refereeing the football game at Peninsula High.  I offered to have my son drive the five minutes to come and put her spare on, but she declined so I drove her to the high school. Publish It!

Submitted by Ryan Spivey, Blog Contributor

When I pulled into the parking lot of the Pierce County Public Library, nothing looked out of the ordinary. As always, all but two of the parking spaces were taken and people were walking in and out of the large double doors. Inside the library, however, I was met by the sound of perhaps forty people, all talking at once. Authors, readers and self-published success stories filled the tiny room. One book in particular caught my eye right off the bat.

Indigo’s Bracelet is written by a mother of two and tells the tale of a ten-year-old girl who listens to her inner voice to find out more about who she is, rather than Read the rest of this entry »

Breast Cancer Survivors Honored

Michael Gardener (left) and Ryan Papac (right)

Yesterday’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month kick-off honoring breast cancer survivors was a blast!  My son, Ryan, and I, along with volunteer Michael Gardener (who came in seven hours prior to the start of his shift to help off the clock) met several local survivors and raised $176 cash to be added to the pot growing with daily donations being taken at each register.  Safeway’s bakery donated a huge sheet cake adorned with pink BCA ribbons and the Starbucks kiosk kept the fresh hot coffee flowing in honor of those who have fought so bravely and won the fight.

I was honored to meet several such survivors who have agreed to share their stories with us.  During the coming weeks, I will be interviewing each of them in the hope that their stories will inspire those who are currently in the battle trenches to fight the good fight and remember that they are not alone.  If you or someone you know would like to share your story, or would like to share information about resources, please contact us through our tips@gigharborblog.com email.

With so many still losing the fight against this ravishing disease, fund raising efforts such, as those hosted by Safeway, continue to be an essential source of funding for research entities both locally and nationally.  Our local Gig Harbor Safeway will continue hosting events each Saturday for the month of October in addition to accepting donations right at the checkstands.  Look for representatives from the Gig Harbor Blog at Safeway each Saturday this month.  See you there!

Gig Harbor Safeway Goes Pink

Think Pink!

Breast cancer touches families across the world and robs them of wives, mothers, daughters, sisters and dear friends.  Thankfully, with new strides in medical technology and treatments, the tide is changing for the better.  People like you and me can make a difference in the race against time by donating to a reputable Breast Cancer Awareness charity, such as that sponsored and facilitated by the Gig Harbor Safeway.

Over the past ten years, Safeway stores throughout the country have raised more than $50 million and our own local Safeway has been a top contributor to this event each year by hosting fun and innovative fund raising events like the coffee & cake service in honor of our local breast cancer survivors happening Read the rest of this entry »
